In the Making of Vacant/Centre
Vacant/Centre (space)
Vacant/Centre is the home base of Vacant, located in Tokyo’s Yoyogi-Hachiman neighbourhood. Opened in 2021, it is a complex space that continually explores diverse ways of being a place. Across its seven floors are a gallery, store, dining, and residence, each designed so that the overlap of experiences and activities within each area gives rise to a polyphonic place.
Vacant/Centreは東京・代々木八幡エリアに位置するVacantの活動拠点で、様々な場の在り方を探求し続ける複合的な空間として、2021年にオープンしました。全7フロアの施設内には、ギャラリー、ストア、ダイニング、レジデンススペースがあり、それぞれの空間の体験・行為の重なりによって、ポリフォニック（多声的）な場が生成されるよう設計されています。

Praxis
“Praxis” is an open-ended installation by Yusuke Nagai, unfolding within the gallery space at Vacant/Centre.
Through the interplay of objects from Vacant/Multiple and works by invited artists, the installation evolves organically over time, embodying the ongoing thought and practice of Cultural Placeology.
It is an endless exploration of place—not a completed exhibition, but an invitation to share in the continuous emergence of place itself.
"Praxis"は、永井祐介がVacant/Centreのギャラリースペースで展開するオープンエンドインスタレーションです。
Vacant/Multipleのオブジェクトや、作家の作品を介して、〈文化空間学〉の思考と実践を反映しながら、展示は日々有機的に変化していきます。
それは場を巡る終わりの無い探求であり、完成された展示ではなく、場が立ち上がり続ける過程そのものを共有する試みでもあります。
Floors
The site comprises a seven-floor complex—five floors in the main building and two in a separate annex—created by connecting two existing buildings, both over fifty years old, and renovating them to our own design.
敷地には、築50年以上の雑居ビルと古民家をつなぎ合わせ、自社設計によりリノベーションした、本棟5フロア・別棟2フロアからなる複合施設があります。
Gallery
On the first floor of the main building, a staircase at the front entrance leads down to a semi-basement Gallery, where exhibitions and events are presented around the open-ended installation Praxis.
本棟1階、 建物正面から階段を下りた先に広がる半地下のギャラリースペースでは、オープンエンド・インスタレーション”Praxis”を軸に、展示やイベントを開催しています。
Store
The Store space on the second-floor of the annex, located at the rear of the site, presents and offers Vacant’s original products alongside works and objects by invited artists.
裏手に位置する別棟2階のストアでは、Vacantのオリジナルプロダクトをはじめ、作家による作品などを展示販売しています。
Dining
The Dining space on the first floor of the annex hosts occasional food events and pop-up cafés.
別棟1階のダイニングでは、不定期でフードイベントの開催や、ポップアップのカフェ営業を行っています。
Other Spaces
The upper floors of the main building house Vacant’s studio and collective office, as well as a Residence and Studio for artists undertaking research and production during their stay.
そのほか、本棟にはVacantのアトリエやコレクティブオフィスに加え、アーティストが滞在制作を行うためのレジデンスとスタジオを備えています。
