The Basis"

Kazuaki Ohashi

at Vacant/Centre
2024.8.9 fri - 9.1 sun

Vacant/Centre

The climate of the Japanese archipelago, where forests cover two-thirds of the land, has fostered a tradition of wooden architecture, and with that history, earthen walls were born and plastering techniques were refined. In a way, plasterer exists as part of the original landscape of our activities to create a dwelling place.

Kazuaki Ohashi, who worked on the plastering of the Vacant/Centre building, says that he discovered plastering as a technique in order to ‘enrich one's life’. Rather than a return to traditional techniques, he continues to move his hands in order to bring back primitive sensations by touching clay and stone every day, and to prepare the basis for living more essentially and vividly.

In this exhibition, we will be displaying the objects that he has created personally using his skills and free-flowing ideas while being involved in numerous construction sites as a plasterer. We aim to create a space that evokes the origins of human life by developing the appeal of plastering from multiple perspectives.
