押しつぶされた車の姿は、斜め上から見下ろす俯瞰的な視点で描かれた「大和絵」のように、実世界とは異なる立体感をまとっている。それは動きを留め、その姿かたちを改めて観察するための「標本」のようにも見える。これまでに作家が発表してきた、どの作品にも通底する、古いものへの愛着、素材のセレクトと、その掛け合わせに溢れている遊び心は、今回の作品にも独特のユーモアとユニークネスを与えています。

東京を拠点に制作を行う永井誠治は、『HARD CORE』(2015)、『Heavymetal』(2019)と、Vacant/Harajukuでは過去2回の展示で、ネオン管を使った作品、そして古錆びた金属を使ったブリコラージュの立体作品を発表してきました。Vacant/Centreでは初となる今回の展示では、車のオブジェを用いた平面・立体作品を含めた、最新の連作が並びます。

The crushed cars evoke the perspective of traditional yamato-e paintings, depicted from a bird’s-eye view, and carry a dimensionality distinct from the real world. They also appear like “specimens,” frozen in motion and inviting renewed observation of their forms. As with all the artist’s previous works, this series reflects a deep affection for the old, a playful approach to material selection and combination, and is imbued with a distinctive sense of humor and uniqueness.

Based in Tokyo, Seiji Nagai has previously exhibited at Vacant/Harajuku with HARD CORE (2015) and Heavymetal (2019), showcasing neon works and bricolage sculptures crafted from rusted metal. For his first exhibition at Vacant/Centre, his latest series includes both two-dimensional and three-dimensional works using car objects.

Seiji Nagai

Founder of the vintage clothing store DEPT, which he launched in 1980 in San Francisco, followed by New York the next year, and then Tokyo in the same year. Since retiring in 2010, he has continued his creative pursuits independently. He is the father of Vacant director Yusuke Nagai.
