Vacant/Centreの建物は約半世紀前に建てられたビルと、その裏手にある古い民家の2棟で構成されています。今回は「場づくり」の次なる実践として、自ら設計をおこない、この建物のフルリノベーションに取り組んでいます。
共同設計者には、原宿の時代から親交のあるBP./phyle inc.の前原康平さん(@bptokyo)。自分の無茶な発想を受け止め、根気強く向き合い、具現化するための道筋を切り開いてくれました。双方の拘りと、つくることの愉しみを分かち合った密度が空間の質に大きく作用している筈です。
自分にしかつくれないような空間をつくること。
初めての本格的な設計作業に於いて先ず目指したのはそんな至極単純ながら、とても重要なこと。だから既にある外の景色に目を向けるのではなく、ひたすら自分のなかに下りて行き、そこに在る、大切にしていた記憶や、忘れることのできない感覚を掘り起こして拾い上げ、寄せ集めては捏ね上げる作業を延々と繰り返す日々を過ごしました。
寛大なサポートを受けながら、牛歩の如くじっくりと取り組んだプロジェクトは、スタートしてから15ヶ月が過ぎたいま、その姿がようやく見えてきました。晩夏のオープンに向けて、まだまだ捏ね続けます。
Vacant/Centre consist of a building that was built about 50years ago, added with an old home tucked in the rear. As the next chapter in 'placemaking', I’ve been working on the full renovation and the design of this building.
Co-designer is Kohei Maehara @bptokyo (BP./Phyle inc) whom I’ve known since the Harajuku days. He’s patiently dealt with my absurd ideas, and paved the path to embody them into reality. The persistence from the both of us, and the density of joy we shared in creation, should be broadly reflected in the depth of the space.
Creating a space that is unique to myself.
A real simple yet much an important factor, this is something I was aiming for when approaching this full-scale designing for the first time. As opposed to focusing on the preexisting view outside, I devoted into my inner self, spending days searching for the precious memories and dredging up the unforgettable senses over and over.
With tremendous support, this project is finally about to see the light after 15 months in the works. The work continues, until the opening in the late summer.
