文化空間学理念文/Cultural Placeology Foundational Statement

『文化空間学/Cultural Placeology』とは、 ある〈空間〉を特定の〈場〉に変容させる、文化的なモノやコトとその関係性を巡る考察と実践である。

文化空間学における理念は、我々が断片化された価値観に陥ることなく、本来持っているさまざまな価値を関係づけるポリフォニックな感覚を用いて、人間の根源的な営為としての文化を捉え直し、生の全体性を個々人が取り戻していくことにある。

Cultural Placeology is the study and practice of cultural things and relationships that transform a space into a specific place.

The idea of Cultural Placeology is to recapture culture as a fundamental human activity and to restore the wholeness of life to each individual, using a polyphonic sense that relates the various values inherent in human beings, rather than falling prey to fragmented values.

2009年、東京・原宿でスタートしたプロジェクトスペースVacantでは、展覧会やライブ、トーク、マーケットなど、10年のあいだに数百回にわたる「場づくり」を行いました。そのなかで繰り返し立ち会ってきたのは、建物という〈空間 / space〉が、人々の営みを通して〈場 / place〉へと変化していく瞬間です。

空間が場へと変化するとき、一体何が起こっているのか。2021年、新たにVacant/Centreを立ち上げるにあたり、それまで対峙してきたその現象にあらためて目を凝らし、場づくりの可能性をさらに広げていくためには、それまで積み重ねてきた実践や直観を、一つの輪郭として捉え直す必要がありました。文化空間学は、そのための思考の器として生まれ、その後のVacantの実践を支える指針となりました。

〈文化空間学〉には「学」とついているものの、確立された理論があるわけではありません。数々の実践や直観、偶発的な出会いを糧に、少しずつ形づくられてきたものです。理念文は、その営みを見失わず、いつでも立ち戻ることのできる拠り所として書き添えました。

文化空間学は、いまなお未完成の営みであり、現在進行形の実践です。だからこそ、その扉は誰に対しても開かれています。この営みを、ともに考え、ともにつくっていけたらと願っています。

2009 saw the opening of Vacant, a project space in Harajuku, Tokyo. Over the following decade, we created hundreds of occasions for placemaking through exhibitions, live performances, talks, markets, and many other cultural activities. Time and again, we witnessed the moment when a physical space was transformed into a place through people's presence, actions, and shared experiences.

What is it that happens when a space becomes a place?

When launching Vacant/Centre in 2021, I found myself returning to that question. To better understand the phenomenon I had long been engaging with—and to expand the possibilities of placemaking—I realised I needed to reconsider the practices and intuitions accumulated over the years as a coherent whole. Cultural Placeology emerged as a way of giving shape to those experiences and intuitions, and has since become the guiding principle behind Vacant's ongoing practice.

Despite its name, Cultural Placeology is not an established academic discipline. Rather, it has gradually taken shape through years of practice, intuition, and unexpected encounters. The accompanying statement of principles was written as an anchor—a place to return to whenever I risk losing sight of that path.

Cultural Placeology remains an unfinished undertaking and an ongoing practice. Precisely because it is unfinished, its door remains open to everyone. It is my hope that this will become something we can continue to think through, and build together.
