本展は陶芸家・明主 航とVacant主宰・永井祐介による共作インスタレーションの展示となります。日本古来から通ずる、見えず聞こえずの「間」を、無や空虚としてではなく、余白／余韻という関係性をつなぐものとして捉え、その感覚を「間の据え」と題して表現する試みです。

明主は近年「型取り」の手法で、箱型の作品や〈白刻〉という器のシリーズを制作しています。型を用いながらも、素材の掛け合わせや、型から外すための砂敷き、丹念な仕上げの過程に様々な偶発性を取り込み、ひとつひとつ異なる個性を持った作品が生まれています。

2023年のVacant/Centreでの展示を契機にコラボレーションを重ねてきた両者が、それぞれの活動を通して探求してきた「空間の可能性を引き出す」実践の交差点として生まれた本作は、Vacantのオリジナルレーベル〈Vacant/Multiple〉に通底するコンセプトを体現する展示でもあります。

This exhibition presents a collaborative installation by ceramic artist Wataru Myosyu and Yusuke Nagai, founder of Vacant. The exhibition explores the ancient Japanese concept of “Ma”—the space between things that is neither visible nor audible—not as emptiness or void, but as a connective realm of margin and resonance. This sensibility is expressed through the title Place the Space.

In recent years, Myosyu has been creating box-shaped works and a series of vessels called Hakkoku using a molding technique. While employing molds, he embraces various elements of chance in his process—combining materials, laying sand to release the mold, and carefully finishing each piece—resulting in works that each possess a unique character.

This collaboration, which began with their 2023 exhibition at Vacant/Centre, emerges as a convergence of both artists’ ongoing exploration into “drawing out the potential of space.” It also embodies the core concept that underlies Vacant’s original label, Vacant/Multiple.
