「日々の自分の生活と制作の境目をできるだけなくしていきたい」

そう語る明主さんは、今年自らの手で家族と暮らす住まいを改装し、生活と制作の場をひとつにした。生活をかたちづくることと、作品をつくることが地続きにある——その想いは彼の作品にもはっきりと表れている。

ろくろや手びねりではなく、型を用いて成形するのは、かたちについて頭で考えてしまわずに、手の感覚に委ねられるよう、自身を自由な状態に保つためだ。そこには作為を超えた未知の感覚を、ふんだんに呼び込もうとする気概がある。

そして彼は、作品が自然物のように「呼吸する」状態を保つため、あえて表面を釉薬で覆わない。花器として使えば水が滲み出たり、用途の面だけなら不完全と見なされるかもしれない。しかし、そうした不完全さは、過度に安定性を求められてつくられる現代の多くのモノに相反するかたちで、独自の存在感を放つ。

明主さんの作品がもつ存在感は、決して派手さによって際立つものではなくて、周りの空間に静かに馴染みながら、その空間のバランスを整えるように作用する。作品それ自体が「間」となって、周囲の関係性をつなぎ直していく。存在の美しさとは、「ただ在る」という状態を、自らの摂理（ルール）で保ち続ける姿にある——彼の作品はそう静かに教えてくれる。

私たちが自分たちなりの摂理をもって、時間と空間を生きる／活かすこと、そしてその生活そのものを創造行為としていくことは、「つくる」という行為の前段にある自然界のプロセス——発酵や風化、結晶化、あるいは種子が芽吹くような循環——に近づいていくことではないだろうか。

明主さんが目指す生活と制作の合一は、自然物への敬意と愛情に満ちた、素朴でありながらも真摯な「人間としての存在」の探究そのものだと言える。

“I want to eliminate the boundary between my daily life and my creative work as much as possible.”

With these words, Myosyu describes how this year he renovated, with his own hands, the home where he lives with his family—merging his living space and his workspace into one. The act of shaping a way of life and the act of creating works are continuous for him—and that idea is clearly reflected in his pieces.

Rather than using a potter’s wheel or hand-forming, he chooses to work with molds to free himself from overthinking form and to entrust the process to the tactile sense of his hands. This approach embodies a willingness to invite in an abundance of unknown sensations that go beyond intentional design.

He also deliberately leaves his works unglazed to preserve a state in which they can “breathe,” like natural objects. When used as flower vases, water may seep through the surface, making them appear imperfect in terms of function. Yet this very imperfection, standing in contrast to the excessive stability sought in most modern objects, gives his works a unique and vivid presence.

The presence of Myosyu’s works does not stand out through ostentation; instead, it quietly harmonizes with the surrounding space, subtly balancing its atmosphere. Each piece becomes a form of “ma”—a relational interval that reconnects and rebalances its environment. The beauty of existence lies in the state of simply “being,” maintained by one’s own inherent order. His works gently remind us of this truth.

To live and make use of time and space according to our own inner order—and to treat daily life itself as an act of creation—is perhaps to draw closer to the natural processes that precede all acts of making: fermentation, weathering, crystallization, or the sprouting of a seed.

Myosyu’s pursuit of unity between life and creation can be seen as a sincere and humble exploration of what it means to exist as a human being—one grounded in reverence and affection for the natural world.
