#interior, #graphic, #fragrance
For the launch of the first flagship store of Sanva, a fragrance brand based in Tokyo, I was responsible for the overall creative direction and design—from refining the brand concept to developing the graphic identity, spatial design, packaging, uniforms, and even the selection of tableware and cutlery for the café.
[Concept]
The project began with a personal memory embedded in the scent of Sanva’s #2.
When Sanva’s founder, Yoshiyama, was a child, he would drive along the coast at dusk in his father’s car. The smell of cigarettes lingered inside, mingling with the sea breeze drifting in through the window. #2: North Marine Drive [*1] was created from these fragmentary memories. After hearing this story, I experienced the scent differently: a landscape and sensation that were not my own began to surface quietly within me.
A memory held by one person can, through scent, be transmitted to another. I came to realise that this capacity of scent to awaken the human imagination—and our creative faculties—should form the point of origin on which Sanva stands.
From there, we established the brand concept around Recollection and Abstraction. Memory is itself abstract, containing ambiguity, gaps, and open space. Scent gives it a quiet sense of form, allowing a landscape unique to each person to emerge once again. The aim is not simply to present a scent, but to create an opportunity for each individual to encounter anew the memories and sensations held within them.
[Service]
To open up the process through which Sanva’s products are created as scents of recollection, I also proposed the launch of the Sanva Scent Session [*2]—a dialogue-based service that translates each person’s recollections into scent.
Rather than delivering fragrance as a one-way expression, Sanva begins by listening to each person’s memories, transforming them into scents to be shared. Each “scent of recollection” is then archived, where it quietly awakens new landscapes and sensations in those who encounter it, passing recollections from one person to another. This unseen yet beautiful chain of connections is the landscape Sanva seeks to create.
[Visual Identity]
The first principle behind the graphic identity was that the brand should never assert itself too strongly.
Rather than imposing a carefully constructed worldview, Sanva seeks to create moments in which people encounter themselves through scent. The graphics, therefore, should support that experience rather than compete with it.
The logotype was designed with a quiet simplicity that allows it to sit naturally within everyday life and architectural space. The intention was that what remains in people’s memory is not the brand itself, but the experience it makes possible.
The symbol mark, however, took much longer to resolve. I felt uneasy about creating a logo [*3] that could become a consumable icon, detached from the values it was meant to represent. At the same time, Sanva needed a subtle symbol of its own.
The starting point was the five senses, with smell as the point of departure. The most archetypal form created by connecting five points is a star. Rather than adopting that completed shape, I opened it outward, allowing space and indeterminacy to enter [*4].
Instead of fixing it as a single graphic, I established a simple rule: each mark is drawn by hand while passing through the same five points. This allows the symbol to exist in countless variations [*5].
Even when following the same rule, each drawing differs according to the body and sensibility of the person making it. In that way, I hoped Sanva itself would remain open—never fixed, but continually reshaped through its encounters with people and through the passage of time.

The Form Drawn by Five Dots / The Five Senses
[*5]

A symbol that can take on countless forms.
[Space]

Sanva’s first physical space occupies two floors of a newly built building, just a one-minute walk from Yoyogi-Hachiman and Yoyogi-Kōen stations. Rather than creating a fragrance boutique alone, the vision was to establish a place that also incorporates a café and a gallery. Conceived as a destination where the senses are awakened not only through scent, but also through food, art, and encounters with others, I proposed naming the space the Sanva Refreshment Complex (SRC) [*6], inspired by the idea of Embracing the Senses.
Looking at the architectural drawings while the building was still under construction, the first idea that came to mind was to open the ground-floor café generously to the street. As we have practised at Vacant/Centre, the intention was to blur the boundary between inside and outside, allowing the changing atmosphere of the city to flow naturally into the interior. Given its location along a lively street, I believed it was important to create an environment where openness and comfort coexist, fostering relationships between the space and the people passing by.
To avoid interfering with the colours that fragrance evokes in the imagination, grey was chosen as Sanva’s brand colour. The interior likewise adopts a restrained grey palette, creating a quiet backdrop throughout the space while allowing the raw expression of the building’s exposed concrete structure to remain visible.
Against this restrained palette, a number of elements were introduced to bring continual change to the space: aluminium panels [*7] at the entrance, long curtains [*8] with a calm yet vivid presence, and solid timber furniture [*9]. Suspended from the ceiling, a one-metre-wide FRP light [*10] quietly unsettles the senses as an unexpected object, introducing a subtle feeling of the extraordinary.

On the second floor, every core fixture—including the washbasin, display shelves, and central table—was fabricated entirely from FRP [*11]. Glowing softly from within the dimly lit space, these sculptural fixtures create an atmosphere for quietly engaging with scent. Although monumental in scale, they retain a lightness that feels almost suspended rather than imposing.
Standing with quiet dignity along the wall, the sculpture by Yoshihiro Shinjō [*12] introduces another layer to the space. Its rugged surface evokes a primordial human experience: the simultaneous awe and clarity that arise when confronting nature.
Beyond the washi-covered sliding doors [*13] lies the gallery, where generous natural light pours in through large street-facing windows, transforming not only the gallery itself but also the atmosphere of the store throughout the day. Designed as an open framework for exhibitions, events, and future collaborations, it remains a space that can continually evolve, expanding the possibilities of what this place may become.
The countless elements that make up SRC were never intended simply to produce visual effects. Instead, they seek to encourage the innate cross-modal perception through which our senses resonate with one another. From materials and fabrication methods to colour palettes, words, sounds, and the relationships between them, every decision was made with this intention.
There was no rational theory behind these choices. Instead, I returned to the construction site again and again, allowing the project to emerge through imagination and intuition, guided only by my own sense of comfort and surprise. With sincere gratitude to the Sanva team for trusting this intuitive process, to the two members of BP. for tirelessly bringing it into reality, and to everyone who contributed along the way.
