2019年に自身のプロダクトレーベル〈Vacant/Multiple〉を立ち上げる数年前、小さなアクリルの塊に刻んだ言葉──”Place the Space”。今回、陶芸家・明主さんとの共作インスタレーションにあたり、「間の据え」という言葉を添えて、このフレーズを再び呼び起こしています。

場づくりという行為は、〈空間〉という器があり、そこに〈人間〉の感覚や感性が介在し、さらに〈時間〉という流れが燃料となって成立します。そしてこれら３つの要素を表す日本語には、いずれも〈間〉という言葉が含まれています。要素が分断されたままでは成立せず、その関係性をつなぐものこそが〈間〉なのです。

Vacant/Multiple というプロジェクトもまた、モノが飽和している時代のものづくり、という葛藤と課題のなかで「関係をつなぐ触媒」としてのプロダクトをつくろうとしています。豊かさをモノの量に求めるのではなく、人間の感覚そのものの豊かさを信じて。

同様に「間を据える」ことも、数多のモノで埋め尽くすことではなく、ほんの僅かな作用によって「既に満たされている」という状態への気付きを、静かに導く試みです。その気付きが、また新たな場を生みだす契機になることを願いながら。

Vacant/Centre という空間を舞台に、明主さんと共にどのような場を立ち上げられるのか──その瞬間を心から楽しみにしています。

Several years before founding my product label Vacant/Multiple in 2019, I engraved the words “Place the Space” onto a small block of acrylic. For this collaborative installation with ceramic artist Wataru Myosyu, I am revisiting that phrase.

The act of placemaking comes into being only when three elements interact: space as the vessel, human senses and sensibilities as the mediators, and time as the fuel that sets everything in motion. In Japanese, each of these elements—space, human, and time—carries within it the character 間/ma (interval, pause, in-between). They cannot exist in isolation; it is ma that connects their relationships and allows the whole to take form.

Vacant/Multiple also emerged from the struggle and challenge of making things in an age already saturated with objects. Its aim is to create products as “catalysts of connection,” not to measure richness in terms of quantity, but to pursue the richness of human sensibility.

In the same way, “place the space” does not mean filling it with countless objects, but rather awakening an awareness—through the subtlest of gestures—that the space is “already full.” It is in this awareness that the seed of a new place can take root.

At Vacant/Centre, together with him, I look forward to discovering what kind of place can be brought into being—and to the moment it comes alive.
