日本初となる作品展示をVacant/Centreにて開催します。

Chris Kallmyer is an artist who explores new relationships between people and their surroundings through sound, working across the boundaries of music, sculpture, and craft. Vacant/Centre presents the first exhibition of his work in Japan.

Born in Maryland, USA, Kallmyer studied music at the California Institute of the Arts. Beginning his career as a trumpet player, he gradually developed an interdisciplinary practice encompassing participatory installations and performances in museums and public spaces. Now based in Petaluma, California, he creates sound-producing objects using materials such as wood and bronze.

Influenced by Erik Satie’s Furniture Music, Hiroshi Yoshimura’s Environmental Music, and the ideas of John Cage, Kallmyer approaches music not simply as something to be listened to, but as an integral part of our everyday surroundings. Wind chimes that resonate in the breeze, doorbells that welcome visitors, and bells that gather family members together—these objects introduce small rituals into daily life, opening our senses to sounds we might otherwise overlook and to the world around us.

This exhibition presents a selection of works, including new pieces, creating a place to reconsider the relationships between objects and space, the body and its environment, through the act of listening.
