When I think of the things that come into being through the work of my own hands as being like my shadow, cast across the ground by the light that falls upon me, I remember how, as a child, I would suddenly twist and contort my body, half hoping my shadow might move differently from me. Of course, it never did. Yet somehow I never found it strange that it moved exactly as I did. Instead, I took quiet pride in watching its silhouette stretch to many times the height of my own body. We are shadows, revealed by light.
Standing inside James Turrell’s Backside of the Moon on Naoshima, I was first unsettled by the density of the darkness, as though it clung to my skin. What I realised before anything else, through that complete separation from light, was that the body I had always taken for granted is in fact given substance and contour by light itself. In the absence of light, the body becomes almost indistinguishable from nothingness.

Light has been giving shape to us— unceasingly, ever since then. And in much the same way, we too have never ceased looking, touching, tasting. The reason we become hesitant about “making” is that we gradually come to carry the burden and self-consciousness of believing we are the ones who create. Yet perhaps making is no more than the way a drop of water falling from the tip of an icicle quietly alters the shape of accumulated snow— an act carried out by the order of nature itself. I try telling myself: we are shadows, and we are also light.

自分自身の手を動かして生まれてくるものが 降り注ぐ光を受けて、地面に伸びる自分の影のようだと思うと 影が自分と違う動きをしないものかと 身体を素早くくねらせてみたりした幼いときのことがよぎる。 結局そんなことは起こらずに思い通りいかないけれど 逆に思い通り影が動くことの不思議には至らずに 自分の背丈の何倍にも伸びていくシルエットを 誇らしく感じたりしていた。 光によってあらはされる僕らという影。
直島にあるジェームズ・タレルの作品『Backside of the Moon』で体感した(中略)肌にまとわりつくように濃密な闇に、はじめは当惑した。光との断絶によって先ず実感したのは、普段見慣れた自分の肉体は、実は光によって肉付けされ、輪郭を得ているものなのだということ。光なき場所では、肉体は無に等しい存在だった。

光が僕らを肉付けしてくれている それこそあのときから欠かすことなくずっと。 同じように僕らもあの頃からずっと 見つめたり、触れたり、味わったり。 「つくる」ことに身構えてしまうのは 自分がおいおいと、こしらえることの重荷と引け目から。 でも実は、それはつららの先から滴る雫が 積もった雪のかたちを変えるような 自然の理(ことわり)のなせるわざ。 僕らは影であり、光だと言い聞かせてみる。
