「存在」とは、視覚的にどのような質感なのだろうか。

札幌出身、現在東京を拠点に制作を行う牧口英樹は、2009年のとある日を境に、この世界に潜む数々の「場所」を撮り始めました。空間という存在そのものに焦点を当てたその写真には、被写体という形あるものを超えた何かの気配が、たしかに写っています。

そして作家の存在への探究は、眼前に浮かび上がる存在の「現われ」を日記のように描きとった、100点を超えるドローイングのシリーズへと派生していきます。あるときは棒のように直立し、またあるときは壁の凹みのように日々僅かに変化する存在の姿が、ポストカードサイズの紙に黒一色で繊細に描かれています。

本展では14年に及ぶ存在との対峙で生み出されてきた、これらの写真・ドローイング作品を併せて展示、また作家初となる写真作品集『場所　A Place』を刊行します。

What is the visual texture of presence?

Hideki Makiguchi, born in Sapporo and currently based in Tokyo, began photographing the many 'places' that lurk in our world on a single day in 2009. Focusing on the very existence of space itself, his photographs clearly show signs of something that transcends the formality of the subject.

The artist's exploration of existence led to a series of more than 100 drawings, in which he depicted the 'appearances' of existence that emerged in front of his eyes, like a diary. Sometimes standing upright like a stick, sometimes like an indentation in a wall, the figures change slightly from day to day and are delicately drawn in black on postcard-sized paper.

The exhibition will include these photographs and drawings produced over 14 years of confrontation with existence, as well as the publication of the artist's first book of photographic works, A Place.
