Our Native Poetry/Message Card (2020)

古くは言葉とは「言/事(こと)」の「端(は)」を伝えるものとしてあった。「ことば」は、和歌や俳句などを通じて日本語の表現が洗練されていくなかで、いつしか「言葉」と書かれるようになり、それ自身が葉のように広く散っていく情景を伴うような、味わい深い語となった。

やまとうたは、人のこゝろをたねとして、万(よろづ)の言(こと)の葉(は)とぞなれりける。(『古今和歌集 仮名序』)

「言の葉」を贈る楽しみと、贈られる喜びの一助としてのメッセージカード&封筒セットをBullpenのために制作しました。


In ancient Japan, words were used to convey the ‘edge’ of ‘things’. As the Japanese language became more refined through the development of waka and haiku, the word came to be written as ‘kotoba’ (koto=‘word’/ba= ‘leaf’), and it became a word with a rich meaning that evoked the image of leaves spreading outwards.

We have created a set of message cards and envelopes for Bullpen, to help you enjoy giving and receiving ‘word leaves’.

Our native poetry springs from the heart of man as its seed, producing the countless leaves of language. ーKokin wakashū/Kanajo



Redon & Adan/Canister Lid (2021)

BullpenのOriginal Glassに合わせて、2種類の木製Lidを誂えました。フタという至極単純な機能を持ったものにカタチを与えるとき、何かの形状を模したかったのでもなく、もちろん複雑な数式を使ったわけでもない。スケッチを重ねて辿り着いたそのカタチは、自分がつい「掴みたくなる、握りたくなる」感覚の顕(あらわ)れ。つまりは個人的な「アフォーダンス」の嗜好性みたいなものが、フタという仮の姿を纏ってやって来たのだった。

出来上がってきたふたつのフタを名付けるときには、"affordance"からアナグラム的に文字を拝借しつつ、共に19世紀のフランス画家にちなんで"Redon(ルドン)"、"Adan(アダン)"と名付けた。実際に手に取って、このフタが持つ「引力」を感じてもらえたら。

We crafted two types of wooden lids to pair with Bullpen’s Original Glass. When giving form to something as simple as a lid—an object whose function is almost nothing more than “to cover”—I wasn’t trying to imitate an existing shape, nor did I rely on any complex mathematical formula. The form I arrived at through repeated sketches was simply the manifestation of that instinctive feeling: “I want to grab this, I want to hold this.” In other words, a kind of personal affinity for affordance, dressed temporarily in the guise of a lid.

When it came time to name the two finished lids, I borrowed letters from the word “affordance” in a loose, anagrammatic way, and named them Redon and Adan—each a nod to a 19th-century French painter. I hope you’ll pick them up and feel the quiet pull these lids carry.
